Bollywood big Star Shah Rukh Khan In Movie Swadesh

In Bollywood, patriotism is depicted in two ways. The noble -- men in uniform serving the country with their lives. The offensive -- jingoism-spewing Sunny Deol avatars which are more concerned with verbally bashing a certain neighbour of India.

And yet, there are occasions when ordinary protagonists rise above their run-of-the-mill existence to make a difference to the nation.

rediff.com looks at some other faces of desh bhakti in Hindi films.

PS: You, dear readers, feel free to contribute to the list.

Shah Rukh Khan as Mohan Bhargav Swades

In Ashutosh Gowariker's Swades, a commitment personified NRI -- Mohan Bhargav makes a personal trip to rural India. Here he encounters an entirely different world -- one with crucial needs and glaring discriminations.

Mohan resolves to take matters in his own hand and come to the rescue of his people at grass-root level by compassionately tackling opposition and reluctance while instilling the concept of We above I. Our man enjoys this re-connect with his roots so much that he decides to resign from a Project Manager post at NASA to hit homewards, for good.

Although SRK demonstrated considerable patriotic fervour in Chak De! India and Main Hoon Na as well, his Mohan Bhargav is a picture of genuine visionary and unconditional humanity.
