It’s bikini time for Lara Dutta. Over the last three months, the former Miss Universe sweated it out big time to loose oodles of weight, and also to reduce those lovely curves considerably.

Only because, she was required to get into a bikini and do some underwater action scenes for her next film, Blue!

Preity Zinta : “Pure ´Punjabiyat´ To Rule AT Todays IPL Match”

After yesterday’s ‘dhamaal’ start to the IPL (Indian Premier League), where Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Rider’s decimated Vijay Mallya’s Bangalore team on their home turf, the scene shifts to Mohali in Chandigarh.

In fact, Preity Zinta, the co-promoter of the local team, Kings XI Punjab has said that just pure ‘Punjabiyat’ will reign the inaugural ceremony.

Preity almost lost her eye!

If you’ve been wondering why Preity is often seen in dark glasses at her IPL events in and out of Mohali, it’s not for reasons related to fashion.

A seemingly minor eye injury two weeks ago, blew up into a serious problem for Preity Zinta. “Anything could’ve happened,” she shudders.

“At an event in Mohali two weeks ago, a stranger’s elbow jabbed into my eye. I felt the room swim and the eye got swollen immediately. But, after an ice-pack treatment for a few hours, it seemed to be in control. Little did I know there was more in store,” says Preity.

In the next few days, Preity’s eye condition worsened. “The pupil acquired every colour in the rainbow, and the cornea shrank. I was in a state of panic and my mother was so worried. Finally, I went to a really good doctor – the same one who looks after the Bachchans’ eyes, and now, my eye has healed,” she reveals. Now, Preity intends to maintain a safe distance from the crowds during her public appearances in Mohali.
Meanwhile, the Bachchans and Preity seem to have bonded in more ways than one.

And the bonding gets stronger now that Preity joins them on their world tour. “I’m very fond of Jayaji and Amitji. And Abhishek is a chum. I also think Aishwarya is very cool. I’ll be joining them on their world tour in July and am really looking forward to it,” says Preity.

Unlike the other actors like Akshay Kumar and Shahid Kapur who would be making ppearances at selected venues, Preity will be accompanying the Bachchans throughout their two-month tour. Several other actresses, after giving a verbal commitment, have opted out of the tour.

Preity brushes off any suggestion of largesse. “I don’t know why the other actresses aren’t going. The Bachchans are my buddies. They asked me and I agreed, as simple as that. In fact, I’ve been on a world tour with them before and I had a ball. I’m looking forward to this one too. And I do not care who’s going with them or not.”

What she does care about are the ongoing IPL matches in Mohali, and not only for the matches. “The people there are so warm and friendly. Ness and I have begun to care for the town. While the others in the IPL have got developed cities, we’re the only ones who were given a town that’s still growing. And we’re so proud to be part of that growth. Mohali is an air-force base, so only IAF planes land there. There’s already talk of an international airport and several luxury hotels in the town, all thanks to the IPL.”

Rani’s a doting sister

/photo.cms?msid=2974089 Our Bollywood celebes are known for their generosity. They are always helpful to their friends and when it comes to their own people they go out of their way to help them. No we are not talking about Salman Khan this time. We are talking about doting sister Rani Mukherjee who always goes out of her way to help her brother Raja Mukherjee.

It was surprising to see Rani Mukherjee who is hardly seen in big events, present for her brother’s daily soap launch. “Rani is very close to her family and whenever her family does something new she is always with them. Though she had her some prior commitments, she came for the launch of the daily soap.” says a family friend.

Rani came for the launch. She watched the promo and sat through the 20 minute long episode. She was seen sharing her views with brother
Raja Mukherjee, who was extremely excited to have his star sister for the launch. But that was all the actress was willing to do. Post the airing of the episode, she directly headed towards her car and did not speak to the media.

Now does that surprise us? Actually no.. But come the time to promote her latest film with Kunal Kohli, rest assured, Rani will be making her presence felt in every medium of communication.

But is it really cricket?

On a muggy afternoon last weekend, a spectator leapt off an upper tier stand during a cricket game in Eden Gardens stadium in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta.

He survived the fall with broken bones.

The middle-aged man did not fly off his seat because he was carried away by the game.

He simply wanted to have a closer peek at Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan who had turned up in the stands below to cheer a team that he owns in the new Indian Premier League cricket competition.

The multi-million dollar competition has been hyped as one which will revolutionise the game with a fizzy cocktail of cricket, entertainment and celebrity shows.

Starved

So how do you serve up entertainment to embellish a game which is religion for millions of Indians?

It’s a fairly uncomplicated recipe.

Young fans of the Kolkata Knighriders
Young fans of the Kolkata Knightriders

Take a large helping of Bollywood stars, saute it with some more Bollywood music, and then add whatever you can lay your hands on - cheerleading girls, stilt walkers, cyclists furiously riding around the ground, acrobats hanging from the stadium roof.

It appears to be working in an entertainment-starved country where an evening out in the big cities essentially means flocking to shiny, air-conditioned malls to shop, eating unappetising precooked food, and catching a Bollywood movie at the overpriced cineplex.

During what promises to be a blazing Indian summer, the 44-day competition needs to pull out all its stops and entertain parched fans, many of whom still have no loyalty to the newly created city teams.

No wonder then that, for the inaugural ceremony, the organisers hired cheerleaders from America, stilt walkers from Holland, stunt acrobats from Germany and laser operators from China and Malaysia to serve up a visually stunning show.

It was helped by 250,000 watts of sound and 50,000 watts of lighting through lasers and sky tracers.

Many of the players on the field were imported too. The only strong Indian presence appeared to be again, Shah Rukh Khan, who as one commentator said is “seen everywhere and anywhere these days”. He had come to cheer his team and egg on the crowds.

Bollywood brew

Even Calcutta, a city known for its unflagging loyalty to local star and former Indian captain, Saurav Ganguly, appeared to have forgotten him at the weekend game - there were posters of Khan in the stands, and the star’s local fan club walked in carrying huge cut outs of their icon.

At the games Khan can be seen heading an entourage of B-list stars, bling music composers, fashion designers, bouncers and security guards. All eyes are usually glued to them.

In star-struck, hierarchy conscious India, Bollywood stars are like Pied Pipers who lead their legions of fans to love and hate what they love and hate.

Purists fear that in this quest for offering entertainment to woo crowds, the dividing line between entertainment - read Bollywood- and cricket is becoming precariously thin.

The result is very few are actually watching the game at all.

In a Mumbai weekend game, Bollywood’s Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapur, and Anil Kapur ran along the ground sporting the team’s jerseys emblazoned with the name of their upcoming film in a brazen marketing push.

In Delhi, another actor, Akshay Kumar, known for his daredevil and comic acts on screen, found himself suspended from a cable midway through the act, and had to be unclipped and let down.

A Hyderabad team commercial showed the captain VVS Laxman teaching a rather sheepish looking local film star to play cricket.

People like Vijay Mallya, the flamboyant owner of the Bangalore team and a brewery and airline baron, believe that all the entertainment will not distract from the game.

“Entertainment enhances the game. Look at the Olympics ceremonies, look at American baseball. They all have glamour and entertainment. Here we are adding glamour to what is already a pretty glamorous game in India,” he says.

‘Game is sacrosanct’

Others like Venkat Vardhan, who heads a leading Indian event management company that is rolling out the entertainment for the Bangalore matches, feels onfield entertainment during cricket matches should be carefully conceived.

Priyanka Gandhi in the crowd
The charismatic Priyanka Gandhi, daughter of Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi

“The game is sacrosanct. But the combined energy of classy entertainment and good cricket is a good thing. What is wrong is to make the players entertainers. Let entertainers entertain, and cricketers play the game”.

But such “classy entertainment” like getting skimpily-clad foreign cheerleading girls is sometimes threatening to go out of hand at the competition.

In Bangalore beer-addled spectators exhorted the girls to come down and dance with them, screaming in unison to a Bollywood song: “Come to us, come to us, now!”

And in Mumbai, swooning men implored the shimmying girls: “Madam, madam, shake hand, shake hand!”.

Analysts say cricket and the cult of celebrity are feeding off each other at the competition.

“The cricket uses celebrities to feel good about itself. The celebrities use the cricket to stay in the headlines. It’s a symbiosis of a particularly cynical kind,” says cricket writer Lawrence Booth.

Meanwhile, as Bollywood stars dance and cheerleading girls do the jig, electronic scorecards are yet not working in many stadia, and at the weekend match in Calcutta, there was no drinking water available for more than 70,000 spectators.

Also, a floodlight blew its fuse stopping the game for half an hour and the dustbowl cricket pitch invited the wrath of players and analysts alike.

Clearly, there is nothing revolutionary about all this, and how it will change the game - for the better- is unclear.

Rani skips marriage talk at brother’s soap launch

Rani Mukherjee now has 15 days' time to respond to the notice.
It was what you’d describe as a family affair. Bollywood star Rani Mukherjee and her entire family showed up to lend support to her brother Raja Mukherjee who launched his new television soap Kisi Ki Nazar Na Lage on Monday in Mumbai.

While the actress stayed away from prying cameras and inquisitive reporters, her brother was happy to do the talking on her behalf.

“She was not well, and she asked me to cancel the event, but I couldn’t since I had made all arrangements. So I asked her to come if she cannot talk,” Raaja explained.

Sadly for the brother, he couldn’t escape the obvious question that was on everyone’s minds about Rani’s supposedly impending marriage with filmmaker Aditya Chopra.

“It’s just a rumour. See Rani is working with Yash Raj Films, she is doing a lot of work with them. Aditya is just her producer. It’s a professional relationship, so that doesn’t mean she having an affair with him,” Raaja said.

With Rani turning out to be the centre of attention, it’s no surprise few seemed keen to talk about the show that was being launched at the occasion.

Perhaps, Rani might consider making a special appearance on the soap so that we talk about the show for a change!

I feel I am being cheated: Divyanka Tripathi

It is a big bad world out here. Yes the Indian Television industry does seem to be glamorous but once you enter it, you know how bad it is. Where on one hand a few actors are pampered, some new comers have borne the brunt.

Divyanka Tripathi aka Vidya of ‘Banoo Main Teri Dulhann’ fame has had a taste of this bitter reality. Though she is one of the protagonists of the serial, she is underpaid. We are not saying this; it is Divyanka herself who had admitted the fact a few weeks ago.

We had followed up with her in order to know if the production house has reacted to the news and considered her plea, but it was shocking to know that Divyanka has not been contacted at all.

“Yes it is true that I am underpaid but I do not want to blame the production house for it”, says this girl from Bhopal. She admits it as her own fault that she was unaware of the ways the industry functions since she was a newcomer.

“I was a participant of ‘Zee Cine Star Ki Khoj’ but it was one of my friends who referred me for the serial as I fit the image of Vidya” informed Divyanka.

So is it that finding her a new-comer into the industry, producers have taken advantage of her simplicity? Knowing the truth, Divyanka says that she does not want to “protest against the producers since even they look after their profits”. She wants to put up a Gandhian fight and when time comes is willing to speak to the producer about it.

“But I think that as an actor I’m being cheated” says Divyanka. Our sources say that Divyanki gets a mere three thousand for an episode where as Daljeet Kaur, another new-comer in Sony’s flop serial ‘Kulvaddhu’, was receiving fifteen thousand for the same.

Shocking isn’t it. But again, it is a big bad world. Divyanka is so obsessed with the serial because of the fact that it is her first venture in the television industry that though she had received film offers from big banners, who she does not want to name, she refused them ‘because I had to leave the serial’ and she does not want to give ‘dagaah’ to it.

“The director had come to the sets to meet me but I did not sign the film” clarifies Divyanka.

Is this what actors deserve even after the kind of dedication they give to the serial? Even Divyanka feels that it is high time she gets paid according to what she deserves though in the beginning she had not given money a thought.

But should there be so much of a difference in pay. Guess one has to be smarter with the smart producers who tend to cheat on the actors.

Aamir Khan injured and hospitalized

aamircutout.jpg

Aamir Khan injured himself when a tough stunt for his upcoming flick Ghajini went haywire.

According to an onlooker on the set, Aamir was required to pull up a very fat goon and smash him against the wall. During this bulky incident Aamir ruptured his hamstring muscle and the injury was so worse that Aamir was not able to stand due to the pain.

A physiotherapist immediately attended Aamir and when the pain aggravated the star was hospitalized. Wifey Kiran Rao immediately flew down to Hyderabad to be beside her hubby in pain.

Ghajini’s shooting has been stalled and will resume only after the actor becomes hale and hearty again.

Sarkar Raj’s first look was unveiled at the film’s event and the promos are going to be aired really soon. Sarkar Raj is the sequel of RGV’s super hit Sarkar.

As Abhishek says, “The movie shows how Sarkar Subhash Nagre takes a backseat and his son Shankar Nagre takes matters in his hands.”

Sallu unviels his pony tailed look

Salman Khan surprised one and all with his pony-tailed look at the music launch party of Pahlaj Nihalani’s new flick, Khusboo-The fragnace of Love.

Apparently Salman is growing his tresses (or implanting them) for his look in his upcoming movie Tarzan.

The handsome hunk was looking chic in a suit and gelled pony tailed hair and surprisely arrived exactly on time at the launch party.

Tashan boycotted by multiplexes

tashan_11 copy copy.JPG

Tashan has run into trouble just a day before its grand release as the negotiations going on between Yash Raj Films and Multiplexes over sharing revenue has gone down the drain.

Around 125 mulitplex chains like PVR,Adlabs, Inox, Fame India, Fun Cinemas, Movietime and Cinemax have restrained from signing an agreement to screen Tashan. So tomorrow Tashan will not see the light of the day in most of the multiplexes or single screens owned by them.

Apparently Yashraj was demanding higher share of profit around 55 percent for first week collections, which did not go well with Multiplex chains.

Sanjay Gupta made a Bakra by Katrina Kaif

Katrina_kaif_bollywood_07 copy1.jpg

Katrina Kaif revealed her funnier side on the sets on the promo-video of IPL team Royal Challengers and the unlucky man to fall prey to her prank was none other than director Sanjay Gupta.

The beautiful star apparently changed her voice and announced on the mike that Katrina had passed out due to shooting in the unbearable heat for a long time.

The announcement freaked out the unit members and they went helter-skelter to search for Katrina. Sanjay Gupta and Bosco Caesar were worst affected by the news and Katrina’s absence, as they had to complete the shoot in the required time. Sanjay Gupta was happy to finally see Katrina Kaif emerging out with satisfactory laugh on her face.

Darsheel sings All I Need is to be free

Darsheel Safari is singing the hit song of TZP ‘All I need is to be free’ these days but his price is still a crore.

darsheel2_big.jpgDarsheel who has been busy walking down the ramp, endorsing energy drinks and comic books hates the paparazzi following him.

The child prodigy said, I hate going out as people chase me for photos, I hate it,” says Darsheel .”I hate it and I hope I don’t have to do this in my summer vacation.”

Darsheel also made it clear that his priority lies with his studies more than the movie offers he is getting these days, “Yeah but I am not doing anything now (movies) as I don’t want to miss school anymore.”

When asked to give a message to his fans, the young star cleverly quoted, “Hi, thank you and stop thinking that movies are everything. Studies are more important…”
